In a nutshell, im going to show you what happened here: I was on tumblr, and someone was asking advice for help on their friends dog...apparantly it broke loose from where it was supppose to be, and killed 14 chickens (recall one of my dogs killed one of ours earlier in the year). Being a good friend and young Padawan of my dear friend Megan-Kate, ive realized that I cannot really hate my dog (tho to be honest, I really did at first)...Anyways, after she screwed my head on straight, I learned a bit more about dogs...
So these peeps I found on tumblr, dont know what to do with their dog, euthanize it, give it to some farm far away, whatever, so shes trying to help her friend, and i hope that she gets my message... here is what I sent:
I dont know how to send a message on tumblr, but its about the dog: I happen to be an expertees at dog behavior, having 5 of my own: anyways, I had a similar incident with my sweet, non-malicious border collie (he ripped the head off of one of our chickens) anyways, a dog sees a chicken as a toy, prey, something to play with and chase (That is what dogs like best), and once a chicken dies, its an "object" to them, it stops moving, so its like..a toy once its been thrown to the ground, does that make sense? anyways, I hope your friend gets the dog trained, or mainly, gives it to a home that can enrich its behavior and suit its needs. German shepards are very high energy dogs, they need tasks, jobs to do (Thats why they are typically used as police dogs) wheras it be herding, agility, property guard, rat killing, whatever. It needs to be walked frequently, and worn out regularly, it is less likely do to malicious things to other animals (even all in play) if your dog is getting what it needs in life. If your friend is willing to commit to walking it, and giving it attention he/she should keep it, if it isnt. then they should find it a nice home (or like you said farm) where it can live a healthy life. Also, 3 years is not too late to train a dog, its never too late, until its old and blind and deaf :)
